Bradford North branch Lajna held an interfaith event on Thursday 15th March 2018 at the Al Mahdi mosque, Bradford. 9 external guests were present from different faiths. There were members of the police force and mental health charity workers present.

The guests were welcomed and were firstly given a tour of the mosque. Guests were then given a chance to ask questions. Male guests were looked after by male members of the jamat.

One such question was regarding the significance of the segregation of men and women within Islam. Islam has placed this importance teaching for the protection of women providing them freedom from many social ills like the very recent #metoo campaign. Segregation allows both genders to feel at ease and comfort in going about their roles. Another reason for this injunction is that Islam always follows the rule ‘prevention is better than cure’. In this way, erosion of moral values can be prevented, and society is safeguarded from problems such as adultery, teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.

Exhibition on women in Islam
After the question and answer session, a presentation was presented by Mrs Nadera Amini sahiba. The presentation educated the audience about several important women throughout history and world religions. Hazrat Khadija, wife of the Holy Prophet, was a successful business woman and was at the forefront of sacrificing wealth for the poor. Hazrat Maryam a role model for all women was pious and observed great chastity. Other women given as an example were Mother Teresa, Rosa Parks, Fatima Jinnah and the Queen.

An exhibition on the rights of women given by Islam was also on display. Islam has given women financial, spiritual, intellectual, and social status. Islam stresses that education for men and women is of equal importance, and the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of God be upon him) laid down that education is compulsory for both. Nowadays you will see Muslim women active in many professions, such as medicine, nursing and teaching.

At the time Islam brought enlightenment for women, however, in Europe a woman displaying any kind of knowledge was in danger of being burnt at the stake for being a witch! Furthermore, most universities did not admit women to higher learning until the 20th century.

"It is the duty of every Muslim man and every Muslim woman to acquire knowledge." -- (Prophet Muhammad)

He also exhorted both to "seek knowledge even if you have to go to China."

Event was ended with lunch. Each guest was given the book ‘life of Muhammad’ and a series of leaflets on hot topics such as extremism and loyalty to the UK.
