“They are planting for themselves and the next generations. They should learn these things from the beginning, how to help the community and invest for the next generations.”

They came with shovels, mulch, wheelbarrows and trees, lots of trees, ready to give back to their community.'

The Windsor branch of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community partnered with the Essex Region Conservation Authority and the Little River Enhancement Group to plant 150 native trees in Bush Park along the Ganatchio Trail on the city’s east side.

“We wanted to do something for Canada 150 and Windsor 125,” said project manager Arfan Ahmad. “Love of our homeland is part of our faith. This is our way of showing our commitment to community.”

Nine-year-old Sanaa Mian was at the Esplanade Drive park with her father and two older brothers.

“I want to plant some trees,” she said. “I think it’s better for the community.”

Her father Waseem Mian likes to involve his children in community-oriented events.

“They are planting for themselves and the next generations,” Waseem said. “They should learn these things from the beginning, how to help the community and invest for the next generations.”

Standing ready to put a shovel in the ground were Waseem’s sons Aleem, 17, and Ibrahim, 13.

About 40 volunteers, many wearing T-shirts that read “Love for all, Hatred for none,” gathered under overcast skies to take in a brief tree-planting tutorial from two ERCA specialists.

“This is actually a perfect day for planting,” ERCA’s Gina Pannunzio said. “It’s overcast and there’s moisture in the ground.“

The group planted four varieties of oak along with sycamore, basswood, freeman maple and black walnut.

Pannunzio explained the area will become a no-mow zone that eventually grows into a naturalized  extension of the woodlot to its south.

“Any additional trees in the Little River watershed area will help clean the water,” she said. “It’s a beneficial way to improve the environment.”
