Perspective: Ramadan is a time of prayer and charity | Samar Ahmad

It is stated in the Holy Quran, "O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become righteous." (2:184)

Since the start of the blessed month of Ramadan on May 27th, there have been a series of unfortunate attacks by so-called Muslims. It is important to juxtapose the immense difference between the true Islamic approach to Ramadan and what extremists have done recently in Manchester and London. Instead of striving for ramping up prayers and increasing charity, they go out and commit forbidden and un-Islamic acts.

It is stated in the Holy Quran, "O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become righteous." (2:184) In addition, the Prophet Muhammad has mentioned: "Whoever fasts and prays during the nights in Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven." (Bukhari) The major goal of fasting is thus to improve oneself spiritually and attain nearness to God.

In an effort to continue to bridge the gap between world religions and foster a sense of community, as a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) of Cleveland, I would like to send a cordial invitation to all at our local mosque for an event entitled, "Fasting in Major World Religions." It will be on June 14th from 7-9 p.m. We will be having presentations from leaders of Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, and Sikhism, followed by a Q & A session.
